Derek A.E. Fuhrmann, Songwriter Behind “Gone, Gone, Gone,” Dies at 44

Derek A.E. Fuhrmann the songwriter behind Phillip Phillips’ double-platinum hit “Gone, Gone, Gone,” died on June 27 in Nashville after a battle with cancer. He was 44.

Derek A.E. Fuhrmann music career began at the University of Delaware, where he formed a band called Omnisoul. The group later became known as The Crash Motive and signed with Sony BMG in 2005. Their songs gained national exposure, with “Waiting (Save Your Life)” appearing in the Fantastic Four (2005) soundtrack and on the TV series Joan of Arcadia.

After the band’s run, Derek A.E. Fuhrmann pursued a solo career as a singer, songwriter, and producer. In 2012, he co-wrote “Gone, Gone, Gone,” which peaked at No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track became a mainstream success, featured in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Grudge Match, and multiple TV shows, including Degrassi: The Next Generation.

Because of its popularity and emotional impact, the song earned Fuhrmann an ASCAP Pop Award at the 31st annual ceremony. Following that achievement, he collaborated with well-known artists such as O.A.R., the Goo Goo Dolls, Five for Fighting, and Kygo.

Throughout his career, Fuhrmann balanced commercial success with artistic sincerity. He brought a heartfelt, anthemic sound to each project, connecting with both fans and industry peers alike.

A celebration of his life will take place this fall.

Fuhrmann leaves behind his wife, Mackenzie; two sons, Finn and Boone; parents, Fred and Deborah; sisters, Donna, Karin, Gail, and Nancy; and brothers, Andrew and Rob.
